In the aftermath of the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the stringent laws mandating mask-wearing begin to fade away, a discernible change in interpersonal dynamics has become evident. During the height of the health crisis, the universal adoption of masks was deemed an indispensable measure to safeguard individuals from the transmission of the virus. However, beyond their protective function, masks inadvertently ushered in a subtle transformation in the way we connect with one another.

The observation centers on the multifaceted role of masks: while serving as a vital shield against the dangers of the pandemic, they also act as an unforeseen impediment to the richness of non-verbal communication. The crux of this transformation lies in the hindered expression of emotions, notably the quintessential human gesture of smiling. Smiles, as powerful conduits of positivity, happiness, confidence, and friendliness, have traditionally played a pivotal role in fostering social bonds.

The argument posits that the very act of donning masks, a crucial necessity during perilous times, unintentionally curtails our ability to convey emotions effectively. The visual obstruction of smiles, which are symbolic of warmth and goodwill, creates a perceptible gap in the non-verbal language that forms the basis of human connection. The absence of this expressive element contributes to a perceived diminishment in the overall warmth between individuals.

By underscoring the nuanced interplay between the practical necessity of masks for public health and the unintended consequences on the emotional fabric of human interaction. As mask mandates gradually recede, there is a hopeful anticipation that the revival of unobstructed smiles will herald a return to a more emotionally resonant and affable social environment. In essence, the narrative reflects on the intricate balance between safety measures and the nuanced intricacies of human connection that were temporarily obscured by the essential act of mask-wearing during the pandemic.

To combat this subject the projects outcome was to create a website that would hold a variety smiles to give the viewer an warmth and freindliness that they may have felt lost in there day to day surroundings from the pandemic. (Smiles from website poster->)

Taking art selections from the website they were further used to develop a poster/leaflet used as a giveaway marketing technique to gain traction towards the project.

Above is a set of physical outcomes of how the fold up poster/leaflet works. The design uses a large scale format so that the leaflet can also be used as a poster. As you can s3ee there is one side of the leaflet that holds more information such as the name, title of the project and a QR code directing the viewer to the smilingiscontagious.co.uk website.
